Joe Pat Attaway
1938 – 2013
Joe P. Attaway passed away at the age of 74 on September 9, 2013, after a six year battle with Multiple Myeloma. He was born in Sulphur Springs, Texas on December 7, 1938 to Thelma and Thomas Attaway and grew up on land settled by his Great Grandfather in 1876. Upon completing an M.S. at East Texas State University, Joe Pat served as an educator and administrator for Duncanville I.S.D. for 35 years. Joe began ranching in 1953 and upon retirement, he ranched HerfordÂ’s full time.
Joe Pat is preceded in death by his parents and his brother William Zane Attaway. Joe is survived by two daughters; Jana Attaway Swenke and husband, Kenneth J. Swenke; Cara Attaway Whitaker and husband, Chris Blake Whitaker; and grandchild, Story Blake Whitaker.
Services will be held Saturday, September 14, 11:00 A.M. at the Spence Chapel at First Baptist Church, 116 Oak Avenue, Sulphur Springs, Texas 75482, officiated by Reverend Fred Lewis. Visitation begins at 10:00 A.M. Immediately following, a family graveside service with Military honors by the Hopkins County Coalition will be held at the Attaway family plot in Black Oak Cemetery.
