Caroline was my Dad's wife and love. I didn't call her step mom, because at just 7 years my senior, she seemed more a very close friend who shared all the joys and difficulties of knowing and loving my dad who was sometimes complicated. I've never had such mixed emotion at one's passing. Hating her loss to her siblings, daughter, and grandchildren, but at the same time wanting to sing the joys of "Free At Last!, Free At Last! Thank God Almighty I'm Free At Last!" No, she was not African American, but was enslaved and imprisoned by Alzheimer's the last decade of her life here. Alzheimer's had taken the Caroline we knew from us some years back. If you don't believe in the soul and spirit of a person, Alzheimer's will make the reality of the inner person evident to you like nothing else can. I am truly grateful to have known her joy, her ability to persevere in the face of challenge and difficulty, her ability to love faithfully in sickness and in health, good times and bad. And... I am truly joyful with the remembrance of this Texas beauty with a laugh that filled the room and every one in it with laughter once she let hers go. And the remembrance of a personality so big she was unmatched, unique, inimitable, and was sorely missed when the disease took it. But the disease can't erase our wonderful memories of life and laughter with Caroline. Free At Last...
