Obituary of Betty Sprague

Surrounded by her family, Betty Ruth Taylor Sprague passed away Saturday, August 31st at her home in Sulphur Springs. Visitation will be at West Oaks Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Services will be held at First Baptist Church of Sulphur Springs on Wednesday, September 4th at 10:00 AM and will be officiated by Reverends Mark Bryant and Fred Lewis. Burial will follow at Old Saltillo Cemetery. Betty Ruth Sprague (Miss Betty) was born September 27, 1931 in Saltillo, Texas. She was the first of eight children born to Holley Taylor and Flora Crane Taylor. She always loved being a second mother to these siblings. She married Steve H. Sprague on November 27th, 1949 in Greenville, Texas. He preceded her in death on October 31st, 2003. The couple raised their four sons in the Pine Forest community among good friends and neighbors. She was employed at the Como-Pickton School District for 28 years where she was cheer leader and pep squad sponsor for 11 of those years. She often said that she hopes there will be a yellow school bus in Heaven as she rode one so often here on earth. She also hopes that the bus will have a nice soft recliner for her so she will be more comfortable! One of her favorite activities was countless hours of playing cards and dominoes with family and friends. (She tended to always win, was suspect score keeper and her grandchildren might sayÂ…Â….was a poor loser)! Mrs. Sprague was a member of First Baptist Church of Sulphur Springs and the Joy Sunday School class. Her family will be forever grateful to the members of her class for their prayers, loyalty, support and eternal friendships. Survivors include her four sons: Steven Sprague and spouse Brenda of Alexandria, Virginia; Richard Sprague and spouse Vicki of Waco; Chuck Sprague of Dallas; and Scott Sprague and spouse Carole of Forney. She is also survived by nine grandchildren who were proud to call her Nana: Holly Green and spouse Keith of Rockwall; Ben Sprague and spouse Emily of Alexandria, Virginia; Hannah Van Dyke and spouse Ross of Waco; Heather Kimball and spouse Brian of Royce City; Tarah Tristan and spouse Jonathan of Dallas; Tim Sprague of New York City; Ty Sprague of Waco; Paige Sprague of Corpus Christi; and Hunter Sprague of Forney. Seven great grandchildren survive; Sophia, Lola, Beckham & Hendrix Green; and Jack, Charlie & Henry Kimball. Three sisters and one brother survive; Pat Johnson of Sulphur Springs; Joyce Marchi and spouse Gino of Galveston, Brenda Hurst of San Angelo and Harold Wayne Taylor of Mt. Vernon. One sister-in-law, Frances Sprague Miller Barnes of Floydada, Texas also survives. Mrs. Sprague was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Zack Taylor; and two sisters, Billie Marie Cockrell and Margaret May. The family would like to thank Legacy Hospice and all of the caregivers and sitters who gave such dedicated and devoted care. These include Esther Vaughn, Donna Camacho, Cheryl Stewart and Linda Villela. They all went beyond the call of duty and we will be forever grateful. Also, thanks to Dr. Darren Arnecke and his staff for their excellent care through the years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
