Obituary of Ewell Massey
Funeral services for Ewell White Massey will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at the Myra Wilson Chapel at Sulphur Springs City Cemetery with Rev. Charles Moore officiating. Military gravesite honors to be provided by the Hopkins County Military Coalition. Burial will be at Sulphur Springs City Cemetery with Jack Massey, Adam Massey, Zachary Massey, Jerry Massey, Steve Massey and Jim Brata serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Crusaders Class of the First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, May 6, 2013, at West Oaks Funeral Home. Mr. Massey passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas after a brief illness. He was born September 24, 1916, in Midlothian, Texas, the son of Clifton Dennis Massey and Edna White Massey. He married Sarah Lambeth Worsham on September 10, 1946, in Sulphur Springs. Mrs. Massey preceded him in death on February 21, 2008. After leaving the family farm in Ellis County, he worked for Dallas Wholesale Grocers and United Gas Pipeline. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942, and was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii until the end of the war. After the war, he was partners with his brother, C. D. Massey, in a café known as the PantherÂ’s Den in Midlothian. In 1948, Mr. Massey began the family business, Massey Service Station, which he operated until 1992. He was also instrumental in the design, construction and operation of MasseyÂ’s Convenience Center which opened in 1993. He was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club and a past member of the Board of Trustees of the First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed keeping up with the activities of his grandsons and was an avid sports fan, always ready to discuss the latest Rangers game, Mavericks game, Cowboys game or prizefight. Survivors include one son, Jeff Riddell Massey and wife, Priscilla Frazer Massey, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, one daughter, Andrea Elaine Massey, of Dallas, Texas, grandsons Jack Worsham Massey and wife, Elaine Blacklock Massey, Adam Frazer Massey and wife, Stephanie Howell Massey, and Zachary Ewell Massey, great-granddaughters Margaret Frazer Massey and Georgia McKenzie Massey, all of Houston, Texas, and his devoted caretaker and excellent cook, Iola Lindley, who pretty much had no choice other than to become a serious sports fan herself. In addition to his beloved wife of sixty-one years, Mr. Massey was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Emily Ann Massey, and brother, Clifton Dale Massey.
