Honorary pallbearers will be Bryan Steele and Jayden Story. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 11, 2012 at West Oaks Funeral Home. Mr. Guthrie passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at his residence. Mr. Guthrie was born on August 4, 1943 in Mexia, TX, the son of Lester and Lavera (Sterling) Guthrie. He married Cherry Daniel on June 29, 1979 in Hillsboro, TX. She survives. Mr. Guthrie was a professional truck driver for many years, working 12 years for AP Green Company. Jim took pride in his work and the fact that he never had an accident in all of his years of driving. After retiring from truck driving, Jim spent several years working the counter at Cass Motors in Sulphur Springs where he met many new people. Jim always had a love for cars and motorcycles and could fix just about anything that may be wrong with them. He loved camping and fishing with family and friends. Lake Tawakoni was his favorite lake where he spent many a day fishing for old “Gerb”. The love he had for boating earned him the nickname “Captain Jim”. Listening to his old albums and picking his acoustic guitar were some of his favorite pastimes. Jim was a kind, gentle man that would do anything to help a fellow neighbor, friend or family member in times of need. He was the “go to” guy when it came to buying or repairing used cars. After one of his fishing buddies passed away several years back, he took it upon himself to make sure that his widow was taken care of by keeping up the yard and making the rounds after she heard someone outside during the middle of the night. Jim dearly loved his beautiful wife Cherry, his children, grandchildren and dog Cujo. He raised 2 step children but never liked the word stepdaughter or stepson. If Jim raised you then you were his son or daughter to anyone that he talked to. Heaven is a better place today. Jim will be greatly missed by many loved ones. He lived a good life that made lasting impressions on many people. We were proud to call him our husband, dad, granddad, brother, uncle or simply friend. Jim asked Jesus to come into his heart and forgive him of his sins. He was baptized in the name of The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. As we mourn the loss of this great man, we have the assurance to know that we will meet again in Heaven where Jim will have a new body and will be waiting to welcome us home. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, Jimmy Wayne Guthrie and wife Cathy of Arlington, Michael Neil Guthrie of Mexia, Dori Guthrie of Dallas, Stephanie Padron of Dallas, Danny Weems and wife Lynda of Como, Joe Guthrie of Las Angeles, CA, Jennifer Guthrie of Sulphur Springs and Amy Story and husband Greg of Paris; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Dan Guthrie of Whitney; sister, Delinda Shamblin of Waco; several half brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be made to the Hearts of Life Animal Rescue at www.heartsofliferescue.org. Arrangements are under the direction of West Oaks Funeral Home.
