Obituary of Billie Faye Hughes
Funeral Services for Billie Faye Hughes, of Sulphur Springs, Texas will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at West Oaks Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Byrd officiating. Interment will follow at Sulphur Springs City cemetery with Bill Hughes, Phillip Jennings, Grant Jennings, Jarred Jennings, Miles Tucker, and Jim Teetes serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Jerry Jennings, Joe Dan Kennedy, Dillon Hughes, and Zach Tucker. Visitation will be Monday, August 27, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at West Oaks Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hughes, a longtime resident of Sulphur Springs, passed away Friday, August 24th, at Rock Creek Health and Rehabilitation in Sulphur Springs.
Mrs. Hughes was born December 31, 1927 in Sulphur Springs, Texas. She was the daughter of the late W. J. Harris and Faye Lucas Harris. She attended Sulphur Springs schools, and continued her schooling at StephenÂ’s College, Columbia, Missouri. She later graduated from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, earning a B.S. degree in education. She taught in the Waco public school system at Sanger Avenue School, before her marriage to Thomas Dillon Hughes, who preceded her in death.
She was joint owner of the Harris Insurance Agency for twenty years. She was a former member of The WomenÂ’s Forum, Dial Study Club, MotherÂ’s Culture Club, and Lena Day Garden Club. For many years, she was a member of the First Christian Church, where she often played the piano or organ in Sunday morning services. In more recent years she greatly enjoyed the Sulphur Springs Community Bible Study group.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by sons, Bill Harris Hughes of Longview,TX, Joseph Henry Hughes and wife Rosemary of Plano,TX, Tommy Hughes and wife Beverly of Mount Pleasant, SC, Son-in-law Phillip Jennings of Emory,TX, grandchildren Anja Tucker and husband Miles of Golden, TX, Grant Jennings and wife Shantel of Golden, TX, Jarred Jennings and wife Toni of Brenham TX, Layne Teetes and husband Jim of Sulphur Springs, David Hughes of Belton, SC, Liesl Westbrook and husband Ed of Mount Pleasant, SC, Melissa Tiller and husband Josh of Bluffton, SC, Dillon Hughes of Plano, and Hannah Hughes of Plano, and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Dillon Hughes, daughter Lu Linda Jennings, brother William Lucas Harris, and her parents.
