Mr. Thornton taught my daughter Anna Currin three years ago and we have known him for many years prior to that because Anna started at WRE in kindergarten. We only found out he had passed on Saturday and as we have told other friends and parents the response has been universal shock and sadness. Every one of the children had something nice to say and it was obvious how much they cared for him and respected him. In my own dealings with him he was genuine and sincere and I will miss him. We had moved on from WRE but we just expected that he would be there when ever went by. He devoted a large part of his life to the children he educated and he is to be commended for all his efforts. I only wish that he could be here to be thanked.
Sincerely
Patrick Currin

I was a student of Mr. Thornton in 08-09 and would just like to say that he was one of my all-time favorite teachers. I can still remember him teaching us "pery"meter and giving out Dum Dum lollipops. It seems unfair that the students in the coming years won't be able to. Goodbye Mr. Thornton, for the last time.

Bernie was so loved by countless students, both past and present. He was firm when he needed to be, but had a gentle and compassionate heart that I greatly admired. There was a peacefulness about him. To his work family, Bernie was a very special friend. We will miss him so much. I pray for a deep sense of peace and comfort for Bernie's sweet family.

To the Family of Mr. Thornton,
Having four children come through White Rock Elem, we got to know Bernie as both our daughters were in classes of his. What a genuine good man. Teachers in general are special people but some stand out, excelling at their trade, and Bernie is in the latter category. Sincerity that made students have a natural connection with him increased his effectiveness as a teacher. He was a great role model to both our kids and us a like. He was an important part of our school and his death creates a hole that will never be completely filled. But we will never forget him. Our boys are disappointed not to have the chance to be in his class next year, but like us, they are better off for having known him. Our prayers are with you.

Bernie will live on in the hearts and minds of the hundreds of children he has taught through the years-a wonderful legacy. Matthew is among the fortunate to have been his student. A caring, talented teacher and a true gentleman with a fun, dry sense of humor, he left many lives that are better because of him.

I got to know Mr. Thornton just a little bit when my oldest son, Nathan, had him for 6th grade three years ago. I was so grateful for Mr. Thornton's influence on him. He was a wonderful teacher and a sweet man. I am so saddened by this loss of a precious life. My youngest son, Adam, was looking forward to having him next year. At the annual end-of-year tug-of-war battle between the 6th grade classes, Adam ALWAYS cheered for Mr. Thornton's class and when they lost they year, he said he couldn't wait to be in his class and he was going to "win it for him next year." I will never forget his gentle smile and manner. He will be greatly missed. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers. We rejoice in knowing that Mr. Thornton is with his Savior in heaven and we will see him again one day.

Everyone who knew Mr. Thornton loved him. He has been a part of the lives of his students and the community of White Rock Elementary for years. Both of my daughters had Mr. Thornton for 6th grade math and will dearly miss him. They learned so much in his class, not only about math, but about his passion for teaching and love and kindness for his students. They both said they will always remember his "smelly scented markers" and the "dum-dum" pops he would pass out to the kids. We will miss him here, but know that he is face to face with our Lord and Savior right now.

Bernie....or Jr as I grew up knowing him, was not only a childhood friend, but we consider him a member of our family since my sister married Wayne and my cousin married Raymond. When I got the news my mind flooded with sweet childhood memories. Wasn't it just yesterday that you, myself, Cindy, Ricky and Mickey was terrorizing the Church of God in Borger, Tx. How about the time you and I went riding around and saw a car go right thru someones living room window?! And then of course the night when all of us was there when our nephew Stephen went to be with the Lord. You were a great uncle to him, and I know that you and him are up there fishing on the shores of heaven....with your daddy sitting beside yall. Take care my dear friend....Till we meet again. Connie

Our family was so sad to hear of the loss of Mr. Thornton. He touched the lives of so many kids and famillies. He tought both of my children, and was such a great teacher. In talking about him with my kids, and their friends, I learned some things about him I did not know: He loved the Jets, and every Friday he would bring in a football, baseball, or something he had that was autographed to show to the kids. One of the kids said "He was so nice, and he was the one teacher that would let you come in his room and "chill" when you were upset." Mr. Thornton will be missed so much!

This year was my first year at White Rock and with teaching all together. Bernie never said much...he didn't have too. He would walk by my room daily and always give me that gentle smile that put my first year teaching jitters to ease. Towards the end of the year we began to talk more, I'll never forget on the last day Bernie tapped me on the shoulder with that great smile and said "you made it!"
Mr. Thornton, you've made it! And we will see you again soon.

I worked with Bernie at White Rock Elementary. He was such an amazing teacher who always had a sweet smile on his face. We used to talk about the Rangers during dismissal or just in passing in the hall. I will miss seeing Bernie practicing with the 6th graders for the big softball game against the teachers. He was always so sweet to take time to pitch for all of those kids.

We were very sad to learn of Bernie's death. He was such a kind person and a wonderful teacher! The girls both felt that he was the highlight of their 6th grade year. I am convinced that both my girls embraced math so well because of his teaching and encouragement. He had such a passion for math, that it translated so well to his students. This world will be a sader place without him. We have a sure hope that we will see Bernie again someday based on God's promise of the ressurection.
Our sincere condolences to all of his family and close friends, we know he will be missed!

This was my first year at White Rock Elementary School, where Bernie was the 6th grade Math teacher. I was called by the school district to come and substitute at the school as the Assistant Principal beginning in December. It was my pleasure to meet and know Bernie. We bonded immediately because I had taught 6th grade Math for 18 years and we shared the same hobby of fishing. Whether Bernie was teaching, cooking, frying fish or practicing with his 6th graders for the annual Staff/6th Grade Softball game, he always had a smile on his face. We will miss that smile at White Rock but we know he is sharing it with others.
