Obituary of Charline Smith
Charline Elizabeth Luckey Smith, fondly known as Charles, passed away at her home in Sulphur Springs, Texas on Friday, January 13, 2012. She was born in Paris, Texas on March 18, 1915 to Elizabeth Fallie Sanderson and Charlie William Luckey. Charles was educated in Paris Schools and graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree from East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce, Texas where she met Howard Sterling Smith. They married in October of 1936 and enjoyed 52 years to the fullest until he passed away in August of 1988. Together, she and her husband were among the original founders of KSST radio in Sulphur Springs, Texas, and she selected the call letters for the station. They were faithful members of First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, Texas. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and William McDowell. Three grandchildren also survive their grandmother: Eydie Elizabeth and husband John Ginn, William Howard and wife Lori McDowell all of Sulphur Springs; and Charles Luckey and wife Julie Anne McDowell of Plano, Texas. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: John Charles Ginn, Andy McDowell Ginn and Molly Kathryn Elizabeth Ginn; Legacy Urban McDowell, and Sterling McDowell; and Jackson Luckey McDowell and Ella-Clare Rose McDowell. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter in February of 1965. Charles embodied goodness and a peaceful nature of a refined lady. She will always be remembered for her comforting, wise and generous attributes which she constantly demonstrated through her unique gift of expressing love, dignity and grace to all. A memorial service will be held in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church Sulphur Springs, Texas at 3:00 o’clock on Sunday, January 15, 2012 followed by interment at Shirley Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Sanctuary. Honoring her as pallbearers are William Howard McDowell, Luckey McDowell, John Ginn, Charlie Ginn, Andy Ginn, and Legacy McDowell. “Strength and dignity are her clothing and she smiles at the future.
