Obituary of Mary Porter
Funeral services for Mary Lee Ross Porter, age 91, of Sulphur Springs will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 5, 2011 at Morning Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Harold B. Nash, Jr. officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00, Friday, November 4, 2011 at West Oaks Funeral Home. Interment will follow at East Caney Cemetery with Robert Johnson, Danny Henson, Timothy Ransom, Pete Nash, Cliff Nash, Lester Henley and Jeramy Burkett serving as pallbearers. Mrs. Porter passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Rock Creek Health and Rehab. Mrs. Porter was born on June 30 1920 in the East Caney Community the daughter of Minnus and Lemmie (Berry) Ross. She married Sam Porter on January 22, 1938 in Sulphur Springs. He preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Porter was a homemaker, midwife and also worked as the first black woman for Hopkins County Food Locker. Mrs. Porter was a member of the disabled VeteranÂ’s Auxiliary where she became President. Mrs. Porter was a member of Morning Chapel Baptist Church, Heroine of Jericho, and president of ALA Unit #822. She is survived by her children, Freddie Marie, Sam Jr., Willie Ray and Sharon Annett, grandchildren, Marilyn Kidd, Larry Porter, Benjamin C. Rape, Jr., Kevin Rape, Jr., Bobby Hamilton, Lester Wright, Thressa A. Smith, Jacqueline Bonner, Karmon Porter, Jana Porter, Bobby Ray Porter, Mike Porter, LaTanya Porter, Amber Porter and Desiree Lee, 32 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Trully Mae and granddaughter Barbara Porter. Arrangements are under the direction of West Oaks Funeral Home. www.westoaksfuneralhome.com
