Obituary of Peggy Phillips
Peggy Pearl Gadlin Phillips was granted her angel wings on Sunday morning, July 3, 2011 at Baylor Medical Center-Dallas, TX where her last days were spent with her daughters, family members and her many friends by her side. Funeral services for Peggy will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 8, 2011 at Denton Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon with Rev. B. R. Hargest and Rev. W. G. Lacey officiating. Interment will follow at Denton Cemetery with Michael Hickey, Sr., Barlos Sims, Creston Whitaker, II, Eddie Evans, Derek Harrison, Sr. and Manly Sims serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Sims, Julius Watson, Manly Sims, Noel Williams, Leon Lavely, Jr., James Black, Deacons of Deacon Baptist Church, Deacons of Metropolitan Baptist Church.
Peggy was born on June 24, 1944 to the late Felmon U. Gadlin and Nena Lillian Sims Gadlin in Mt. Vernon, TX. She began her education in the Mt. Vernon Public School system, and graduated from Booker T. Washington high school in Mt. Pleasant, TX. She earned a BachelorÂ’s degree from Bishop College, and later attended Texas WomenÂ’s University in Denton, TX where she earned her MasterÂ’s Degree in Education.
Peggy was a Master Educator for the Dallas Independent School District for 38 years. She enjoyed teaching and guiding the children she taught. She loved the Lord, and her two daughters, who along with Peggy are collectively referred to as “The Gadlin Girls.” Denton Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, TX, where Peggy accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior, and the Metropolitan Baptist Church of Dallas, TX, where Peggy was an active member, both shared an affectionate place in her heart. She enjoyed reading, following high school and professional sports, playing the piano and listening to Gospel music. Peggy was a generous contributor to various charities throughout her life. Helping others was very important to her. She was soft spoken and possessed a trademark sense of humor.
Peggy is survived by two loving daughters, Nena Cherise Graves (Roderick), Katy, TX and Lisa Chanette Whitaker (Creston), Duncanville, TX; an adorable grandson, Caleb Andrew Graves; a loving aunt, Freddye Sims Watson of Houston, TX; first cousins, M.L. Gadlin, Michael Hickey Jr., Julius Watson, LaGina Stephens, Janice McKinney, Noel Williams, Fred Sims, Barlos Sims and many other loving family members and friends.
