I remember Mr. Duckworth from Houston Elementary and he is among the handful of educators who really made an impression on me. In addition to his duties as principal, he taught 6th grade English. If you wanted to play softball on Friday afternoons, he required nothing less than 100 on your Friday homework. I never missed a game! Thank you, Mr. Duckworth, for the early life lessons you taught so many of us. Rest in Peace.

I am so thankful my Grandaddy (D.N. Gamblin) thought to take his grandchildren by to meet your parents once on a trip to Sulphur Springs when I was a child. He always had great stories to tell about teaching school "back then". More visits followed through the years - always such a pleasant and unhurried time with them both.

I was in the 3rd grade when James Bowie Elementary School opened and Mr. Duckworth was my principal. At that time, I remember thinking that he was the tallest man I had ever seen. I was sure he had to have been related to Abraham Lincoln ... ha ha ha! Funny the things you thought when you were young. I loved him. He loved being an educator and truly loved all the kids. He will always have a special place in my heart. What a legacy for your family. Wish there were more men of true integrity just like him.

I have missed his visits. I was worried that he was not in good health, since I could not reach him on the phone. He was a fine man. I was proud of my cousin.
