Cheryl,
I am so sorry you and your family have lost your mother. She sounds like a remarkable woman that I wish I could have gotten to know better.
Thinking of you!

How do you say goodbye to someone who held the family together in so many special ways? Grammer was the first person on my husband’s side of the family to invite me into her home (which occurred on our first holiday as a married couple). I hold her responsible for cultivating the art of fellowship that the Houghton’s seem to know best. That Thanksgiving she hosted 12 of us sleeping in her home and an additional four for everything but sleeping! There was more food than I could have ever imagined, and more pies than I had ever seen in one place! Everyone happily lived on top of each other for the week. The idea that a family could cheerfully spend so much time together in one place blew me away – but that is what we did! I will never forget how Grammer made sure to have everyone’s favorite foods – even Bagel Pizza’s for Thanksgiving – and still made sure to keep Papa on his special diet! I will also never forget how this woman enabled her growing family (many who didn’t live nearby) to continue to feel close and comfortable. To this day I feel closer to all of you than my own aunts and cousins!
It has been a blessing to watch as the three of you (Janie, Cheryl, and Karen) shared in caring for your parents as their health began to decline! Each of you has demonstrated loyalty and commitment to them in your own ways and as time has passed, I see Grammer’s influence on each of you…
After Grammer and Papa moved to Sulphur Springs, Janie began to demonstrate the generosity she learned from her mom by regularly and graciously hosting many more than 16 of us; now that all the grandkids are married, and great-grandkids exist! Karen displays her mother’s sense of nurturing through conversation. At family gatherings, she always finds a way to let you know she is interested in you and desires to connect. Cheryl exhibits her mother’s warmth through her cooking. Though she doesn’t regularly have time to prepare an ornate meal these days, it is obvious this is one of the many joys she learned from her mom.
It saddens me that the boys and I cannot be there to hug you all and to enjoy fellowship the way the Houghton’s know best! It is sad to know this wonderful lady won’t be around the next time we are all together but there is also great joy! Joy because Grammer is now with Papa and Jesus in heaven and because her legacy lives on in each of you! We love and miss you all!
xoxo Tomi (and Judah and William)
